Sarah Leïla PAYAN
Born in 1994 in Marseille. Lives and works in Marseille.
After studying art history, she started a photography course in 2013 in Paris. Since 2016, she has been pursuing this apprenticeship and developing her artistic approach at the ENSP Arles from which she graduated in 2020.
The projects she develops involve ontological questions about the image. This reflexive approach towards the photographic image is born from an observation: that of a time when photography is omnipresent, in a very important flow. Within this saturated and confused visual field, it asks itself how can the image be re-singularised?
In response to these questions, she has begun to cultivate a logic of deceleration, a visual economy within her work. Highly influenced by neo-classical painting, especially the way it considers symbolic force, she maintains a reflection on history. Do the images tell? And do they still tell? How can we tell through images when such an important flow is invited into our daily lives? What are the new modalities of photographic images? In her work, she explores the relationship between image and narrative, narrative or the absence of narrative.
