Nina MEDIONI
Through the practice of photo and video portraiture, Nina Médioni’s work questions the moment of the encounter and the ambiguity that resists in the knowledge of the other. The image intervenes as much to replay this strange face to face between a photographer and “his” subject as to question the identity of the latter. What is this thing that resists photography? What does the other deliver from himself?
A truth or a narrative of the self?
The artist is interested in the persistence of singularities within ensembles (a political or religious community or a city). She works in her images with the porous border, the hesitation between individual and social bodies; personal, sometimes secret ambition and attachment to a collective identity.
These questions have led her to take a particular interest in youth, as a period of uncertainty and training. By playing on this tension, she places herself both in a documentary practice and in a more subjective work of the image, taking unexpected detours as in her last work, Le Voile.
